Pelagic Zone is an instrumental jam band from Hamburg, Germany, formed in early 2009 when four musicians met in a bar in the Hamburg-St. Pauli district. From the beginning, the project was about exploring music through collective improvisation, with jams developing into structured songs that served as frameworks for further exploration. Their name derives from the Greek word "pelagic," describing the open sea far from coast and sea floor. The band's self-titled debut album was released in May 2013, followed by the live album "Latitudes." Members include Martin Mundt on keyboards and synthesizers, Peter Urban on drums, Julian Bohne on bass, and Bernd Ubben on guitars and vocals. Their improvisational style blends elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and jazz fusion.
