Ecca Vandal is a South African-born, Melbourne-based alternative rock singer-songwriter and rapper. Born in Louis Trichardt, South Africa, to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents, her family left the country during Apartheid when she was a child in the late 1980s and settled in Melbourne, Australia. She immersed herself in jazz at an early age before discovering hip-hop and punk rock, eventually studying for a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Jazz at the Victorian College of the Arts. Her music defies easy categorization, fusing elements of rock, hip-hop, pop, punk, and soul into an explosive and genre-fluid sound that has been described as dance-punk and post-punk revival. She released her self-titled debut album in 2017 and has continued to release singles in subsequent years. Her fearless genre-blending and high-energy performances have earned her a devoted following across Australia and internationally.
