Rafael Toral is a Portuguese experimental musician born in Lisbon in 1967. He played his first gig as a drummer in 1984 but became known as a guitarist, pioneering guitar-based drone and ambient music in the 1990s with acclaimed albums like Wave Field (Drag City) and Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance (Touch). He has collaborated with avant-garde luminaries including Phill Niblock, Jim O'Rourke, and Rhys Chatham, and is a member of the electronic orchestra MIMEO. In the early 2000s Toral made a radical shift with his "Space Program," a fifteen-year exploration of electronic music built on silence, physical gesture, and jazz-like phrasing using modular synthesizers, modified amplifiers, and self-built instruments. Since 2018, with Moon Field (Room 40), he entered a third phase that merges his ambient origins with his improvisational electronics, coming full circle while continuing to push the boundaries of sound.
